Chaos in Carbon Fiber
Team Project by Hannah O Toole, James Anderson and Son Nguyen
Progress
Step 1: Small scale study

The first process is to do a small scale study to examine the pattern of carbon fiber and fiberglass and start experimenting with string logic.
The idea is to create a system that can have variation in size and aperture that can open and close allowing an opening to pass through

Team Project by Brendan Clifford and Son Nguyen
Step 2: Facade Application
Individual project by Son Nguyen
Our next step is to apply the system into a facade using the string logic studied.
The idea for the system is to create a facade that can perform as a shading device but also perform structurally and express strength quality of the carbon fiber by holding up the stairs.

Step 3: Full scale Study
After experimenting with the large scale and obtained the carbon fiber, we move to a full scale study, which explores the property of carbon fiber and try to come up with a system that can be used to apply to a facade system or a threshold piece.

Given a frame of 7' x 3' x 3.5', we have to create a system to wind the carbon fiber and remove afterwards, but also have to be flexible that can change into any shape desired

Coming up with a system that can rotate and change positions to create different panels on the frame requires a complex system of parts all can be adjusted to create multiple size and shape. The main idea is to have 2 straight edge and one spline to create depth to the panel.

Frame Assembly

Frame Flexibility

Ball Hinge
Scripting and Prototyping:
After the frame system is thought out, we began to create a script to prototype the desired panel shape and size, as well as linking it together to create a full system
Form Study through animation
We also study forms through animation process , through this, we can examine different shapes and configuration moving from one form to another and also make an informed decision on which panel to make and connect to each other.
Pattern study
After the animation process, we began studying different weaving pattern to strengthen the carbon fiber structure. using the overlaying method, the carbon fiber gets stronger with every weave ande create a rigid structure.

Future step: Facade application
Using what we learned, we the reapply the system into a facade system , keeping the frame in place for mounting and removing the spline. The system can be adjusted to have denser wind to provide more shading. at the same time, the shadow pattern create an interesting texture to the inside of the building that many conventional material could not acheive
